For World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, Blizzard has taken a different route than ever seen before on other Expansions such as the Wrath of the Lich King (Wotlk), and The Burning Crusade (TBC). Instead of only adding new zones and areas, previous areas of World of Warcraft have also been changed fundamentally, giving even old zones a modern feeling. The reason for this is an old acquaintance: Deathwing. Inspired by infinite hatred, he broke through Azeroth and caused devastation like the inhabitants of World of Warcraft have never experienced before.
The beta test phase for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm took place from 01.07.2010 to 22.11.2010. It ended about two weeks before the release of the addon and Blizzard was enthusiastic about the lively participation and the great feedback from all testers. We have summarized information and useful knowledge about beta under the heading WoW Cataclysm Beta for you.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm was released on December 7th, 2010. Information about the release and insights into the Collectors Edition can be found on our Cataclysm Release page.
New maximum level: 85
Contrary to previous speculations, Blizzard does not raise the level cap with Cataclysm to 90, but “only” to 85. After only 6 hours, the first player was able to bring his character to the new maximum level (85).
New breeds: goblins and worgen
With the Worgen (Alliance) and the Goblins (Horde) two new races are entering the World of Warcraft universe. The worgen of Gilneas previously lived behind the gray mane wall and are covered with a terrible curse, the goblins are stranded after a volcanic eruption in their homeland on the Lost Islands. Available classes, race skills, the history of the respective races and information about the first quests for goblins and worgen.
New areas and revision of the old world
Cataclysm brings eight completely new areas, and many of the “old” zones are being fundamentally revised. And finally you can fly everywhere – including Stormwind City, Orgrimmar and more. In addition, the level range of many areas is adjusted to give players a clearer route and shorter distances when leveling.
Instances & raids
With Cataclysm are eight new 5-man instances (The Vortex Pinnacle, The StoneCore, The Throne of the Tides, The Halls of Origin, The Lost City of Tol’vir, Grim Batol, as well as the Blackrock Caverns) and initially 4 new raid instances ( Baradin Hold, Throne of the Four Winds, The Bastion of the Twilight and the Blackwing Descent) as well as two completely revised “old” instances (Deadmines and Shadowfang Keep) were introduced. In addition, all Blackrock instances have been revised. Which instance lies where, which opponents and bosses await you there and at which level you can enter the instances: Instances & Raids in Cataclysm.
Raid and emblem system
The raid system in Cataclysm differs significantly from the previous one – both 10 and 25 mode now share an ID, but you can switch between the two at any time. The badge system in Wrath of the Lich King, which granted patches of triumph and frost in patch 3.3, has also been completely redesigned: instead of emblems, there are heroism and bravery points in Cataclysm.
Talent & mastery system
With the addon, all classes and the talent system were completely overhauled. All passive talents have been abolished, the mastery system takes their place, which has a special effect for each talent tree. Explanations of the talent and mastery system under Talents and Mastery in Cataclysm.
Class changes, new class combinations
With Catclysm additional breed-class combinations have been unlocked. Whether dwarf shaman, tauren paladin or undead hunter – these and many more combinations are now possible. The most drastic change is the complete revision of all talent trees – how your class plays in Cataclysm, what talents it has and which breed can choose which classes can be found under Cataclysm class changes and class combinations.
Simplify status values / item bonuses
Blizzard thoroughly cleans up the status values: MP5 (mana per 5 seconds) and defense rating have been deleted, for example, without replacement. Attack power and spell power are only available on very few items and many other bonuses have been changed heavily.
Professions & archeology
In addition to many new recipes and fine-tuning for many professions, Cataclysm is also launching a new secondary profession: in addition to fishing, first aid and cooking, every character can now devote himself to archeology. Master archaeologists who have found enough fragments of ancient times can even create powerful objects themselves or call ancient mounts and pets.
In Cataclysm there are of course a lot of new achievements that can be achieved, in addition, the new guild achievements have been introduced.
Guild bonuses and achievements
The introduction of guild bonuses (guild perks) and achievements should reward players in a guild. A guild can level up to 25, which of course benefits all members: guild bonuses, achievements and levels in Cataclysm.
With the rated battlegrounds, for the first time in Cataclysm you can earn arena points outside the arena. Blizzard is also introducing Tol Barad, a new open battlefield that even includes a raid instance that is only open to the controlling faction. In addition, all PvP emblems have been abolished, instead of honor and conquest points: PvP in Cataclysm.
